Journey of a lifetime…

Dharavi Tour – Mumbai

Overview

If you come to Mumbai as a tourist for a few days and spend your time in the city’s posh southern areas, around the Gateway of India and Marine Drive, it is easy to forget that a large part of the urban population lives in informal settlements and works hard to earn a livelihood every day. Dharavi, with a population of hundreds of thousands, is one of Mumbai’s most well-known neighbourhoods and gained international attention following the success of the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

The tour is divided into two parts. In the first part, the guide takes you through the commercial areas of the settlement. Waste recycling is a major business in Dharavi, where residents and workers collect materials from across the city and bring them to small workshops to clean, process, and recycle them, ranging from old aluminium cans to plastic chairs. Food products such as biscuits and pottery items are also produced in Dharavi. A visit to a rooftop in the centre of the settlement provides an impressive view of the vast area and gives you an idea of the large number of people who live and work there.

On the tour, you will be guided by a local guide who is fluent in English. With his extensive local knowledge, you will experience the sights and sounds of Dharavi as only a local can. The Dharavi Tour departs from a central location in Mumbai and takes you through the heart of the settlement, introducing you to its history, connecting you with its people, and giving you an insight into their daily lives and livelihoods.
