History of the Deccan Odyssey
“Palace on wheels“ was a very successful plan of the Indian railways. Inspired by this success, the government of Maharashtra intended the launch of “Deccan Odyssey“ to increase tourism of the state. The main was aim to promote the tourism of Maharashtra and the surrounding regions. The Maharashtra tourism development corporation (MTDC) with the help of Indian railways worked on this project. Then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 17 January flagged off train via remote control at 5:30 pm from Raj Bhavan in Mumbai.
The inaugural run of the train was from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Thane station and back. The commercial journey of this luxury train kicked off from 4 February 2004. In the beginning, MTDC appointed the Taj group of hotels with the responsibility of managing food, beverages, and housekeeping of trains.
The MTDC gave train on lease to different tour operators such as the luxury train, Thomson cook. No doubt the train has been able to meet the expectations of both the Indian railways and the MTDC.
