A glimpse of Golden Temple – Amritsar

The legendary Golden Temple also known with the names of Sri Darbar Sahib and Sri Harmandir Sahib is situated in Amritsar, Punjab. This temple is known as the Golden temple because it shines with the coating of around 750 kg of pure gold. It is the most important place for the Sikhs to worship and most tangibly spiritual and living monument in India.

The people of India especially the Sikh Community believe that, one visit to this temple helps in compensating the sins committed by them. This enormous creation was established by Guru Ram Das Ji who was the fourth of the Ten Gurus of Sikhism.

The most appealing feature of this temple is that it is nestled in between a pool also known as Amrit Sarovar. This pool has great spiritual and secular realms of human existence. It is strongly believed that the holy water of this Sarovar have a healing power that can cure many medical disabilities, and Bathing in the Amrit Sarovar or the pool of nectar can cure the medical problems of pilgrims come from across the world to bathe in the sacred waters.

The Fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, want to construct a common place of worship for Sikhs and he originate the idea of constructing Golden Temple and Guru Amardas Sahib, the third Guru want to built a holy tank or Amrit Sarovar – the pool of nectar. But this whole idea was executed by Guru Ram Das Ji.

This gurdwara is made up of white marble having three floors. The top floor of the temple is coated with the gold exteriorly. On the top of the gurdwara there is a dome overlaid with genuine gold leaf or lotus petal. The lower part of this gurdwara built with four gates provide the entry to this sacred place. The four doors are decorated with the artistic work located in all the four direction i.e. East, West, North and South respectively.

This temple is a beautiful combination of Hindu and Muslim styles of architecture which is rarely seen nowadays. This artistic design and decoration of pure gold can mesmerize anyone.

The temple is graced spiritually and the wonderful atmosphere full of spirituality and peace, gives matchless sheer pleasure to the visitors. At night Granth Sahib is taken from the shrine to the sanctum it is known as Palki Sahib or the Night Ceremony.

Langer or free meal is also served to tens of thousands pilgrims daily. It is cocked or serves by pilgrims or worshipers, who volunteer who want to offer their duties towards the welfare of the Golden temple. The langer is intake by the visitors as the Prasad of the God.
